Overview

Studio Technical Services (Studio Tech) delivered a remote-production internet and Wi-Fi network for Morning Walk, the media team supporting Optima Batteries at the King of the Hammers off-road race. With crews spread across rugged desert terrain and a constant need to upload high-resolution photos and video, the solution required reliable bandwidth, redundancy, and mobile coverage—all deployed fast and built to survive harsh outdoor conditions.

This case study breaks down how Studio Tech used Peplink bonding, multiple Starlink High Performance terminals, elevated Wi-Fi zones, and vehicle-based Starlink Mini kits to keep content moving to cloud servers from base camp and from anywhere on the race course.

The Challenge

King of the Hammers is the definition of “no-infrastructure” networking:

  • Remote location with limited or inconsistent cellular service

  • Large file uploads (high-res photo + video) required throughout the day

  • Media teams operating from base camp + chase vehicles covering many miles

  • Need for reliable voice comms between production, field crews, and mobile teams

  • Dust, wind, and desert conditions requiring ruggedized deployment

Morning Walk needed a solution that could function as a media connectivity hub while also supporting mobile chase teams that had to send content from wherever the action happened.

The Solution: Bonded Starlink + Elevated Wi-Fi + Mobile Internet for Chase Teams

Studio Tech designed and deployed a layered network built around three priorities: bandwidth, redundancy, and mobility.

1) Network Hub: 30' Tower Trailer Command Center

We used our 30-foot tower trailer as the central hub of the network, providing elevation for both Wi-Fi and radio infrastructure and a protected location for core routing and power distribution.

Why it matters: Elevation improves coverage and stability in wide-open terrain—especially when you’re trying to build reliable zones quickly in a temporary environment.

2) High-Bandwidth Internet: Peplink Bonding + (3) Starlink High Performance Dishes

To deliver the upload capacity required for high-resolution media workflows, Studio Tech deployed:

  • Peplink bonded router (multi-WAN aggregation + intelligent traffic management)

  • Three Starlink High Performance terminals for high-throughput satellite internet

This architecture provided:

  • Increased overall bandwidth for simultaneous uploads

  • Load balancing to keep media workflows responsive

  • Redundancy and resiliency when conditions changed

Result: The media team could upload content to cloud servers reliably without waiting for end-of-day transfers.

3) Event Wi-Fi Coverage: UniFi Access Points on 25' Stands

To create dependable working zones at base camp, we deployed:

  • UniFi Wi-Fi access points

  • Mounted on 25-foot portable stands to extend range and improve signal propagation

These elevated APs created dedicated coverage zones so Morning Walk teams could:

  • Upload photo/video from laptops and field workstations

  • Collaborate using cloud tools

  • Transfer assets quickly to remote editors and stakeholders

Outcome: A practical “pop-up media office” in the desert with connectivity designed for production workflows.

4) Mobile Internet: Starlink Mini + Magnetic Mount Kits for Chase Vehicles

Because KOH coverage happens everywhere, Studio Tech also provided:

  • Starlink Mini terminals

  • Magnetic vehicle mount kits for chase teams

This gave mobile media crews the ability to:

  • Send content from remote parts of the course

  • Upload clips immediately after capture

  • Stay connected while operating far from base camp

Impact: Faster turnaround, better storytelling, and more real-time brand coverage for Optima Batteries.

5) Two-Way Radio Communications: Motorola Radios + Base Station on the Tower

To keep teams coordinated when cellular service was unreliable, Studio Tech deployed:

  • Motorola two-way radios for production and field crews

  • A radio base station with an antenna mounted at the top of the 30' tower trailer

This provided:

  • Extended range across the event footprint

  • Reliable voice communications between base camp and field teams

  • Clear coordination for fast-moving media operations

Results: Reliable Uploads, Redundancy, and Coverage Across the Course

With Studio Tech’s remote network in place, Morning Walk gained:

  • Consistent internet bandwidth for cloud uploads of high-resolution content

  • Stable Wi-Fi coverage zones for base camp workflows

  • Mobile internet for chase teams to transmit from anywhere on course

  • Reliable radio communications for operational coordination

  • A deployment built for harsh outdoor conditions with layered redundancy
